Since 2022, IDLO has actively supported Uzbekistan in establishing a well-functioning framework for alternative dispute resolution, with a primary focus on commercial mediation. This work is essential to reducing court caseloads, improving the enforceability of mediated agreements and providing businesses with pragmatic and efficient means of resolving disputes.

Through this initiative, we offer expertise in the legislative reforms needed to integrate mandatory mediation, ensure the enforceability of mediated settlements, and strengthen the capacity of existing mediation institutions and mediators. IDLO is also collaborating closely with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Justice to assess the potential benefits of adopting the 2018 United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements resulting from Mediation, known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation, which establishes a unified legal framework for invoking and enforcing settlement mediation agreements.

Beyond commercial legislation, IDLO supports Uzbekistan in promoting gender equality and addressing the root causes and impacts of gender-based violence (GBV). This work includes strengthening the legal framework on GBV and sexual harassment, building the capacity of justice sector professionals to implement GBV prevention laws, and developing a case management system for effective oversight and prevention of GBV.
