This sub-project aimed to enhance access to justice for poor and vulnerable women and children in the Iganga, Kampala, Lamwo, Lira, Nebbi and Wakiso districts in Uganda. Building on the results achieved during the first phase of the sub-project, the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Uganda) implemented a series of awareness-raising activities, including community barazas and dialogues, on women’s rights, gender equality and gender-related laws to community members. Additionally, FIDA-Uganda provided online legal information and advice to enhance community awareness on women’s rights and gender equality issues; continued to offer legal counselling, advice, mediation, and court representation services through legal clinics, including mobile legal clinics, and toll-free lines, catering for vulnerable and marginalized women in targeted communities across the country; and supported the establishment and operation of women’s economic empowerment groups in remote communities to improve their access to justice. Moreover, in order to strengthen the capacity of informal justice actors to resolve disputes and provide referral services to communities, FIDA-Uganda delivered training and mentorship sessions on the provision of legal aid services to community legal volunteers and supported them in the delivery of legal aid assistance to the community. Lastly, to ensure the sustainability of sub-project outcomes and secure long-term support for community-based legal assistance initiatives, FIDA-Uganda conducted a study on national and international best practices regarding the recognition and financing of community-based paralegals.
