Justice for Survivors of Gender-based Violence in Complex Situations: Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Women and Girls

Justice for Survivors of Gender-based Violence in Complex Situations: Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Women and Girls

WEBINAR | 7 July 2022 | 13:30 – 15:00 Rome | 7:30 – 9:00 New York

Side event organized by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Global Women’s Institute (GWI) at George Washington University with the support of UN Women, the Government of the Netherlands and the Government of the Philippines on the occasion of the 2022 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

As UN Member States review SDG 5 on gender equality and its interlinkages with other SDGs, it is imperative for “building back better” to discuss actions to intensify national efforts and international cooperation to eliminate all forms of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG). While gender-based violence is pervasive in all contexts, women and girls’ vulnerability is exacerbated in complex situations, such as conflict, organized crime, pandemics, and climate emergencies. Furthermore, in these contexts, women and girls face heightened difficulties in accessing justice and protection. Spotlighting justice for survivors of VAWG is timely, as the COVID-19 pandemic once again showed their needs tend to be overlooked in emergencies.

The panel of experts will provide local, national, regional and global perspectives on securing justice for survivors. Drawing on new research from Afghanistan, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, South Sudan and Tunisia, and lessons learned from practical implementation, the panel will discuss and offer recommendations on legal and justice solutions for addressing VAWG in complex situations, including the repeal of discriminatory laws, women’s access to justice, support services and prevention.
