Justice for Women and Girls: Galvanizing Action for an Equal Future

WEBINAR | 29 June, 2021 | 14:00 - 15:30 Rome (CEST)

Justice for Women and Girls: Galvanizing Action for an Equal Future

Justice is a powerful enabler of gender equality. When women are empowered to stand up for themselves, claim their rights and resolve their justice problems, they can contribute to the full realization of human rights, gender equality and sustainable development.

An estimated 5.1 billion people—two-thirds of the world’s population—lack meaningful access to justice. Women and girls find it harder to access justice. The COVID–19 pandemic has created new obstacles to gender justice or exacerbated existing areas of impunity, including increased gender-based violence, prevalence of discriminatory laws, inability to access justice institutions, unequal property rights, legal identity gaps, limited digital spaces, and discrimination against women workers.

As a prelude to the Generation Equality Paris Forum, this event seeks to address this justice crisis and call for accelerated, ambitious commitment, action, and investment on justice for women and girls.  As co-conveners of the high-level report on Justice for Women, the organizers of this event - IDLO, UN Women, World Bank and Pathfinders – will galvanize a broad coalition of justice actors to support the Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality. More specifically, this event will discuss how we can address justice gaps and accelerate joint action and investment on justice for women and girls. The speakers, inspiring change-makers, will use storytelling as a tool to communicate the importance of justice for women, and will be guided by the following key questions:

  • What justice gaps persist across the six Generation Equality Action Coalition themes?
  • What commitment and action on justice for women and girls should be prioritized across various stakeholders?
  • What lessons or good practices are in place for collaborative engagement to prevent and resolve women’s justice problems, especially those exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic?

This event is organized by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), UN Women, the World Bank and the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies in support of the Generation Equality Forum, Paris, France.
